Bob Buchanan, M.Ed.
3rd Grade Teacher, Covenant Life School
Do you know why the apple is so closely tied to the student teacher relationship? In medieval England, most teachers were not paid, but felt so strongly called to the profession that they trusted the Lord to provide. On occassion a thankful student or parent would bring a small gift to show their appreciation. This gift was usually very practical and most often consisted only of a piece of fruit; most commonly an apple. Why would a sane adult work for such a meager offering? I believe it is because teachers have been blessed with the ability to look far into the future. As a 3rd Grade teacher, my gaze is on the school year, but my vision is set on a decade down the road. Here, in our classroom, the building blocks are being laid down that will prepare these children to fulfill God's calling. To be involved in that process is an honor.
